Your yoga mat for World Yoga Day
Start with the cat-cow pose. Come into tabletop position on all fours with your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. As you inhale, lift your chin and chest and drop your belly down to come into cow pose. As you exhale, round your back upward and pull your chin to your chest for cat pose. Repeat this flowing movement for 5-10 breaths.
Then switch to downward dog. Point your toes and lift your hips up and back so that your body forms an inverted V. Keep your hands shoulder-width apart and your feet hip-width apart. Press your hands firmly into the mat and lengthen your spine. Stay in this position for 5-10 breaths.
After downward dog, sit in child's pose. Start on all fours, sit on your heels and place your forehead on the mat. You can stretch your arms out in front of you or place them at your sides. Stay in this relaxing position for 5-10 breaths.
For a little more dynamism, you can perform Warrior II. Stand with your right foot wide apart, turn your right foot out 90 degrees and bend your right knee so that it is over your ankle. Stretch both arms out parallel to the floor and look over your right hand. Stay in this powerful position for 5 breaths and then switch sides.
To finish your yoga practice, go into Shavasana. Lie flat on your back with your arms at your sides and your palms facing up. Close your eyes and relax your whole body. Breathe in and out deeply, releasing any tension. Stay in this position for 5-10 minutes to finish your practice.
